International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation

The accreditation by SANAS of HECS Laboratory services and under license to SANAS to allow the usage of the ILAC emblem granted by SANAS ensures an extended international confidence of HECS Laboratory services and the results produced by HECS Laboratory services.

This ILAC symbol apart from the accreditation bestowed by SANAS for the accreditation activities as listed in the accreditation schedule imparts an international confidence on the laboratory results generated by HECS Laboratory services when such products and services across national borders, consequently removing technical barriers of trade.

ILAC – the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation- is an international collection of accreditation bodies from countries that forms an association which assists in the removal of technical barriers in international trade.

SANAS which is the only legal accreditation body in South Africa is regularly evaluated by its international peers as competent. Such acceptance of the accreditation body SANAS by ILAC consequently allows for laboratories accredited to use the ILAC symbol through a number of mutual agreements which SANAS and ILAC have agreed upon. It signifies confidence on an international basis of services and products across national borders to allow for a frame work to support international trade in as far as the qualifying product results are recognised with confidence.

Consequently all accredited work performed by HECS Laboratory services enjoys benefits that reduce technical trade barriers. Furthermore ILAC manages through arrangements with IAF the International Accreditation Forum the fields of management systems, products and services, personnel and other programmes through conformity assessments. The two organisation’s ILAC and IAF work together to ensure conformity through assessment on an international basis. It is therefore highly significant that both the technical and managerial processes at HECS Laboratory services are assessed for the conformity to the international standards and guides for which HECS Laboratory services activities are accredited to.

HECS Laboratory services are continuously and periodically evaluated by SANAS and through the quality assurance and fully traceable through an unbroken chain of quality parameters and steps of the quality assurance system in place at HECS Laboratory services. This makes the results fully traceable to the origin of the reported data within the quantified allowable uncertainty for the activities that HECS Laboratory services are accredited for.

SANAS Accreditation

The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) is recognised by the South African Government as the single National Accreditation Body that gives formal recognition that Laboratories, Certification Bodies, Inspection Bodies, Proficiency Testing Scheme Providers and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) test facilities are competent to carry out specific tasks.

SANAS certificates are a formal recognition that an organisation is competent to perform specific tasks.

SANAS is responsible for the accreditation of Certification bodies to ISO/IEC Guide 62, 65 and 66 (and the IAF interpretation thereof), and laboratories (testing and calibration) to ISO/IEC 17025. Inspection Bodies are accredited to ISO/IEC/17020 standards. GLP facilities are inspected for compliance to OECD GLP principles.
